Pros

Flexible hours, pleasant work (for the most part) if you enjoy people.

Cons

Driver starts out the day needing to make ~ $150 just to break even (lease, gas, dispatch fees). Exploitive labor practices that exist because Total Transit has found a loophole in the Fair Labor Act by calling the drivers Independent Contractors. Drivers receive no employee benefits and most cab drivers will average less than $3 an hour after expenses and taxes, some will end their shift owing money to the company. A day driver’s business will consist mainly of below meter fares (vouchers), fine for the cab company as they get their money no matter what but costs the driver $70 - $100 per day. As a result of Discount’s policy of over-hiring the wait time for a cab is usually 1.5 – 2.5 hrs, on busy days some cabbies will wait over 7 hrs. if they really need a car. Because of the low pay many drivers are exhausted from driving too many hours. To get a cab in a reasonable time frame and drive enough hours to turn some profit the driver will not have the chance to get more than 4-5 hours sleep per night, not enough to drive safely. Driver beware!

Pros

It's nice not having constant supervision while you work. Being your own boss, while you are driving & out on the road. Can take breaks when needed. The potential to make great pay, although I was never able to make great money on a regular basis; just occasionally, when there was a special event going on.

Cons

Lack of respect from management...and from "the yard" area also. One man, especially, had it out for me from the start…& was allowed to harrass me. I feel I was targeted. A combination of being new, & just out of a dislike for me. I never gave anyone a reason to not like me. Lack if proper training. Two days is not enough time in training. It is no wonder, so many drivers do not make it as a driver. I found it impossible to make (clear) good money. Occasionally, I would have a good day, but most of the time I struggled to even pay for my lease. Favoritism was clearly seen. Near the end, I was given lemons to drive. Cars with many problems, especially relating to safety issues. I know I could have made it, as a successful driver…but was not given the adaquate time to become successful. Clearly, not enough attention is given to new drivers to succeed. Hence, they have a high rate of turnover. Dishonesty is definitely a problem here. Very disappointed.
