Pros

Depop is very lucky to attract some of the nicest, smartest people I've ever met. I truly believe it's the company's mission that does it – everyone I've worked with seems to be very eco-conscious, progressive etc. I have a lot of praise for senior, mid and lower level employees. Sadly, the same can't be said about most management.

Cons

Where do I even start? Never ending layer of middle-management, treating people unequally and choosing clear favourites, putting you down instead of lifting you up. Depop is not only home to great fashion, it's also the house of racism and misogyny (it's great to hear from your manager, that your team is diverse, because you're all middle-class white but from different European countries). If you're anyone but an arrogant white guy, you won't have a great time trying to progress in the company. The goalpost keeps moving, as you desperately try to prove yourself to your manager. Don't worry – they won't even notice your efforts. You'll also be frustrated by a lack of consequence for people who are clearly messing up at every step. Get used to having your ideas dismissed or worse, claimed by your teammates as their own, with no credit to you. And as a reward for your sweat and tears you might be sent a notebook or a cookie – so it's all worth it, right?

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on your experiences of working at Depop; we’re really disappointed to hear that your overall impressions haven’t been more positive. We’re committed to being a workplace that champions everyone, and where ambitious and passionate individuals can thrive. We’ve grown a lot in the last few years, and alongside this we have brought more and more focus and resources into supporting and developing our people and strengthening our diversity, equality and inclusion strategy. This includes ensuring that our hiring practices - at every level - are fair, unbiased and represent a diverse funnel of candidates. We have also recently refreshed our performance review cycle to ensure regular and consistent touchpoints around progression and reward at all levels of the business. Since our founding moment, diversity, equity and inclusion has been integral to who we are as a business. The ethos of Depop is to celebrate individuality and difference - and over the last few years, as we’ve grown, we’ve worked consistently to extend this into a clear DEI vision and ensure our ethos is woven through how we operate day to day. This has included hiring a full-time Head of DEI, rolling out specialised DEI training for managers and leadership, and building a roadmap for improving representation and inclusion amongst our communities. The People Team encourages individuals to confidentially come forward to raise any concerns they may have in their teams at any point. Even though you no longer work at Depop, your opinion is still important to us. If you would like to discuss anything in further detail, please don’t hesitate to reach out to people@depop.com.
