Pros

Working on real projects in Africa. Opportunity to travel. Suggestions by engineers at all levels are taken well and implemented if of merit. People are generally treated with respect. Work given is generally well delegated and achievable within reasonable time estimations. There's good people here.

Cons

Microsoft Outlook is used (shudders), even though it's piped through gmail. Atmosphere in the Carlow office can get a bit tense sometimes. Silence is respected for the job but a kind of nervousness between people doing different and similar work can lead to a lack of communication between people who should ask each other for help or give it more freely. Different countries have very small differences in operating procedure or standard solutions and in some cases this can be blown way out of proportion. Some Senior Engineers are far too strict in the wording of their emails, utilising red, bold, and underlined font for simple mistakes, or acting as if they are personally dissappointed every time a new trainee makes a mistake, as if these mistakes are not completely necessary for the learning process or are in some way a sign of serious ineptitude and stupidity. In some cases there was a clear disconnect between management and the engineering team. Even in cases where there was a clear will for understanding on the part of management for the work that the engineers do, and vice versa, it seemed like there was a tense atmosphere that encouraged silence and passivity. There one guy I remember was running great numbers and had a track record for doing everything that was asked ond for helping out others, however didn't generally go down for tea and may have felt a bit like an outsider. After one mistake they were let go from the company due to a claimed "attitude" problem. I don't believe this was warranted at all and could have been remedied with a simple talk specifically about what was wrong. If Management had worked in the same room as this person they certainly wouldn't have come to the same conclusion. Pay is only competitive from the perspective of engineers from overseas.
