Pros

The first year working at Crunch is a breeze. It may be challenging at first but once you conquer the processes, there is nothing you can't handle in terms of work. The workload is easy and not really challenging for an accountant anyway. The most challenging task is dealing with other peoples problems/major mistakes that have been made in the past.

Cons

The employees at Crunch are all fairly new to the accounting world. Unfortunately, there aren't many experienced accountants there at all. So for a trainee or apprentice accountant taking their first step into the world of accounting, it can be pretty tough at Crunch. Especially with all of the conflicting advice that is given out by the members of staff. The conflicting advice is due to the fact Crunch do not have any processes in place for training. They do not support their employees on any technical training days and they employ a 'Technical accountant' whose job is to keep the accountants up to date with updates in the accounting world. That doesn't happen and mass confusion is caused. The only training the accountants are provided with is their professional qualification, mostly AAT or ACCA. The staff retention at Crunch is poor. Honestly though, poor is an understatement. This is caused by low salaries, confusion within the workplace & management that doesn't listen to the staff. During my time there, the staff at Crunch were asked to vote on a decision that was to be made in relation to their working hours. By unanimous decision, it was voted against. Later in the year, the item we were voting on was enforced within the workplace. Career progression for accountants is almost non-existent. As an accountant, your only goal is to become a 'Senior Accountant', that's pretty much as far as you can get before it's time to move on. The standard of work at Crunch isn't of that of a more traditional accounting firm. Making the switch from Crunch to other accounting firms has been a lot harder than anticipated. There are so many vital accounting technicalities that I did not learn during my time at Crunch.

Hi, Thank you for your reply, Crunch really appreciates all feedback. Crunch provides professional training as well as in house courses, and as a result of this we have a variety of accountants all at different levels and stages of their career. Crunch provides support for all of its employees in each department throughout the organisation and takes learning and development very seriously. The business also conduct regular surveys and meetings with its managers so every employee will be given the chance to provide feedback on ways that Crunch can improve on all aspects of the business including training. Staff retention is constantly being monitored; the team are continuously working on making Crunch a great place to work. Salaries are competitive and checked regularly against market data and are in line with the regional average. Crunch also provides opportunities for career progression and development. Benefits that Crunch offer are, generous pension contributions, life and health scheme, free breakfasts and subsidised prices at local café’s, bars and gyms. Staff were asked to vote on a decision that would affect their working hours in 2015, the vote was a unanimous decision and Crunch did not implement a change to the working hours. Crunch listened to the feedback from its employees and went with the majority decision. Crunch are unlike any other accountancy firm, we operate in a completely different way making the company more efficient for our customers. Career progression is important to us all at Crunch and we have clear guidelines on the developmental routes a staff member can take.
