Pros

Coworkers at the time were great (though virtually all have left for greener pastures by now). Working with children is rewarding. Extreme lack of oversight on part of owner has its upsides; I was free to come up with creative solutions to the problems I faced.

Cons

While I was there, the owner forgot to pay the company's bills on time, paychecks bounced at least once, and he left on vacation without telling everyone during our busiest week of the summer. He will go weeks without contacting you, only to call you and berate you for an hour about something he clearly doesn't understand. If you do have the misfortune of working with him, make sure any agreement you have with him is on paper and signed and refuse to do any extra work outside of a written agreement. The "bonus" system for lead teachers, where a third of your pay is withheld until you finish the class, is exploitative and difficult to incorporate into your personal budget.

Pros

I’ve worked here for 8 years, and have loved the environment and flexibility of the team. The work I did in this company, with their well-constructed teaching methods and commitment to small class sizes, inspired my entire view on teaching. They also provided me with opportunities that I didn’t expect to get, trusting me with a Webmaster position that helped me shift into the Software Engineering field. It’s also really nice that I’ve been able to know the founder, and to be inspired by his passion and to have the privilege of his mentorship.

Cons

There are some obvious drawbacks that are just part of an after-school program: inflexible schedules, different schools every day, and minimal hours. However, they were understanding of my limitations and always made the days that I was available work. They even kept me in the system for several quarters when I wasn’t able to work shifts, but hoped to eventually return.
