Decisions, particularly involving purchasing, were always based upon excellence regardless of cost. Management always treated everyone with a great deal of respect; never remember one instance where that wasn't the case. Compensation was highly competitive and employee benefits were second to none. The work atmosphere was also was one of low pressure, even though a great deal of work was able to be accomplished. Every day you could tell most, if not all of the people who came to work were happy to do so and thanked their lucky stars that they were employed by The Copley Press. The Copley Press also has, for the most part, enjoyed a great reputation in the industry. Unfortunately, the unions have been able to do for the newspaper business as they have done for the American automobile industry.
