Good pay, decent people - Equipment Operator Constellation Energy Employee Review

Pros

Pay is good. Nearly everyone who works here is (book-smart) intelligent to some degree. Many are understanding & willing to help employees navigate the limited & controlling scope of nuclear tasks governed strictly by procedures. Expectations are high, but it means you can generally count on your coworkers.

Cons

Standards are consistently high, normally good but sometimes approaching irrational or impractical levels. This is par for the course in nuclear. Simple tasks become ridiculously detailed & unnecessarily complicated. Company priorities are sometimes at odds with itself. There is always talk about doing a job safely, efficiently, and error free, yet the company does little to nothing to address challenges to this. Human & material resources are often in short supply to accomplish tasks up to management expectations. Work schedule changes are abrupt & constant, both in days/shifts worked & in-plant tasks. Nuclear used to be far more enticing pay-wise; still high but other jobs are catching up with more benefits (hybrid work) and less headache (NRC/INPO/NOS audits, etc).

Great benefits. Opportunities for advancement.

Some managers should not be in a position of leadership.

Pros

Coworkers are all intelligent and overall good people to spend 12hrs a day with.

Cons

The department is perpetually understaffed. You’ll never actually work an 8hr shift, because no one is dumb enough to vote for that schedule. There’s not enough operators to fill the schedule without being forced all the time for 16hr shifts. Be prepared to be forced for OT on a regular basis even with a 12hr schedule. If your family is important, then this probably is not a good long-term plan. You’re going to miss sports, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, etc. You live at work and home is a place you sleep. The company might advertise company holidays, but that just means you get paid a little more for being here on those days.
