Pros

- Some customers genuinely benefit from the product. - There are smart, kind, and mission-driven people on the team. - I loved working with Community Phone’s customers — seniors and their families — and found that aspect of the role deeply meaningful.

Cons

- In the brief time I was at the company before choosing to resign, I witnessed nearly a third of equity-holding employees leave — not due to layoffs, but via a steady stream of firings and resignations. Like me, many lost confidence in the leadership and direction of the business. - The CEO, James, fostered a toxic environment. He frequently sent disparaging Slack DMs to employees, publicly belittled team members, and was fixated on ranking employees as “A, B, or C players”. In one instance, he fired the entire engineering team during a drunken outburst. - The only employees who stick around are based in countries with high unemployment and fewer options. North American team members tend to leave. - Short-termism reigns. Decisions are driven by immediate metrics rather than a desire to build value for customers. - The CEO lacks conviction and vision — constantly pivoting and throwing things at the wall in the hope something sticks. If experiments don't work immediately, he's on to the next thing.

Pros

Working here has been a very positive experience for me. I want to highlight the leadership because it often gets overlooked in other reviews. Our CEO is a strong, visionary leader who genuinely cares about the direction of the company and its people. He’s decisive and committed to growth, which gives me a lot of confidence in the future here. On a day-to-day level, I’ve been lucky to work under Meg, my manager, who is one of the most supportive and motivating leaders I’ve ever had. She leads by example, is always approachable, and makes sure her team feels valued and heard. My Team Lead has also played a big role in guiding and mentoring me, helping me sharpen my skills and build confidence. And of course, I can’t forget Team Sparta—the culture within our team is amazing. We work hard, support each other, and celebrate wins together, which makes the workplace both productive and enjoyable. Overall, the leadership and team culture here make a huge difference. I feel proud to be part of this company and excited about the opportunities ahead.

Cons

Fast-paced environment — requires adaptability.

Thank you so much for writing this. It means a lot to hear how much you value the leadership and support on your team. We’re especially glad to see Meg, your Team Lead, and Team Sparta called out, they really are the heart of what makes this place special. We know the pace can be intense at times, but it’s exciting to hear that it’s also pushing you to grow and giving you confidence in what’s ahead. We’re lucky to have people like you here helping shape Community Phone.

Pros

- Decent pay - Remote first company - Good customer base

Cons

- Built to punish growth due to a short sighted CEO - No room to scale professionally - More work same or less pay - Management has a biased assumption that no one is working, effort is not properly recognized - Impulsive hiring/firing decisions, tenures are no exception - Good performance is always overshadowed by recent mistakes - CEO has subtle racist phrasing when dealing with his staff (located global) this is also reflected in pay difference based on ethnicity purely discounting talent - Unfair hiring practices when it comes to higher positions, I was one tasked with mentoring my own externally hired teamleader, twice in 2 different departments
