Pros

All of the people who work at CollegeTracks are really passionate about the work and students. Everyone understands that we do whatever it takes to advocate for and help students to and through college. Board and volunteers are all equally passionate and get the mission. There’s been a significant effort to provide professional development opportunities, in house professional development for all staff, and national training opportunities for managers. I have been in the non-profit sector for over ten years and know that professional development opportunities are extremely limited for non-profit budgets, and it's great to know that management is supportive of exploring creative ways for employees to find local, inexpensive, online and in-house opportunities. Also, there's actual growth/expansion to other schools in the county so there’s opportunity for the org to build stronger infrastructure, and opportunities for employees to build new skills and grow into leadership positions.

Cons

This is NOT the organization for someone who does not enjoy generating new ideas, re-assessing programs, and thinking through problems with their colleagues and managers! I started working with CollegeTracks when their Success program was still very small – (only two Success Coaches) and there was a lot of room for contributing new ideas, programming, and tools. CollegeTracks is very innovative and always looking for ways to grow and improve programs and student services. Even the Board of Directors has come up with new ways to raise funds and increase the organization’s brand. Not so much a 'con' anymore, but when I first joined CollegeTracks, benefits were limited. Now the organization offers a health care benefit option (the company pays 90% of the employee premium), dental plan, and a long-term disability plan and is making a retirement saving plan option available (with an employee match).

Pros

Super fun work environment if you enjoy youth development work. The staff is exceptionally smart, passionate, and loves their job. The kids the programs serve are amazing talented youth and benefit from the mission of the organization. Weekly collaboration with colleagues outside of the school I was assigned to.

Cons

Using paper files and outdated tracking systems (as of 2020 so this may not apply) No real lunch break. This is more cultural and basically part of any public school culture where the staff is available at all times.

Pros

CollegeTracks' mission and work is admirable. The Access and Success staff are great resources, mentors, and advisors for students as they navigate the college search, admissions, and transition process.

Cons

Staff are not highly valued and there are not opportunities for advancement. Only candidates with master's degrees are hired, but the salary and lack of benefits do not merit the type of talent CollegeTracks seeks to add to the team. Within a one year period 7 of the 12 staff members left the organization because of poor salary, negligible benefits, lack of professional growth opportunities, and frustrations with not being able to create change within the organization. A current employee is contemplating getting on welfare because the salary paid by CollegeTracks does not allow for her to provide for her family. Employment and hiring practices are borderline illegal, one staff member that left was not paid for vacation time accrued, which is illegal. All staff members are "at will employees" and CollegeTracks has fired staff in the past with no explanation. While the job can be rewarding the organization and leadership is demanding, challenging to work for, and seems to care little about the welfare of its staff. There are other ways to make a positive impact on society other than by working for this organization.
