Pros

There are amazing people at Coalfire - truly caring, empathetic, intelligent, and talented. Benefits are industry standard. Bonuses and raises are terrible. I've been fortunate to have an amazing team and manager. I learned and grew so much and value my time spent there.

Cons

Coalfire lost its heart and soul when it was bought by APAX. Unfortunately, the Coalfire I initially joined doesn't exist anymore. I will say, though, of all the problems, the c-suite's micromanaging behavior takes the cake as the worst part of Coalfire. They micromanage even the smallest of tasks. For that reason alone, I can't sincerely recommend working at coalfire. Coalfire has restructured at least four times in the past 3-4 years. We've been missing sales goals consistently for the last year, so executive leadership is desperate to sell quickly and has laid off 75+ people in the past few months. While that is consistent with other tech companies, given the current economic climate, the executives have not lived up to company values. It's a mid-size(ish) company, and they didn't have a communication plan in place to disseminate the news after they fired 63 people in one day. Most people found out their bosses were laid off when they noticed they didn't show up to meetings and were deactivated on slack. A sloppy email from the CEO was sent out several hours later. Most of the VPs and directors are awesome, and there have been significant strides in DE&I efforts, and there are great DE&I employee resource groups and leaders. However, there is still a toxic presence of bro, country club culture made up of white, middle-aged men in leadership who ultimately overpower all the other leaders when it comes to influencing business decisions.

Pros

- Real client-facing technical work in regulated/FedRAMP environments; good exposure if compliance-heavy cloud is your lane. - Internal mobility exists on paper; managers may encourage internal candidates for promotions. - New management clearly understands their assignment and is saying the right things and taking initial steps that appear to be moving us towards a strong path forward.

Cons

- Promotion paths can be unstable; roles may get restructured mid-process, which makes career planning hard. - Management quality is uneven; promotion into management isn't always tied to demonstrated leadership, technical capability, or appropriate vision. - Limited structured professional development. - Compensation progression can be a friction point, including for internal moves. - Bonus payouts have come in far below target even for top performers, which has been rough.
