Pros

The legal team and entire organization were wonderful. I got exposed to a variety of legal tasks and topics, and felt like my work was making an impact. The organization's culture was also special—employees seemed like they were valued and really enjoyed working there. Even as an intern, people would ask my opinion about cases and were genuinely interested in my response.

Cons

Some members of the legal team could have provided more feedback. The internship was remote because of COVID.

Pros

The organization feels like a tight-knit family. This is not a place where you sit in a cubical and never interact with other humans. The office is built into an apartment suite and each room is roughly organized by department so people you interact frequently with are all right there. I work directly with the Executive Director and it is amazing. Joe is not afraid to let me generate ideas, throw them at the wall and see what sticks. He's been the ED for 35 years and is nothing short of an inspiration. He lets me build entire programs from scratch and constantly encourages me to learn, grow and make contacts as I do so. All of my co-workers are highly motivated in their program areas and it shows.

Cons

Salaries, (at least mine) are not competitive at all, but, the experience I am getting here is far-and-away better than any other non-profit I know of in Philly and I will be able to leverage that when the time comes for me to seek my next position. Management is slow when it comes to doing many administrative things. My first annual review happened 6 months after the anniversary of my hiring date. Part of this can be explained by Joe being very involved in all areas of the Council (for the better) but it does suck when your review is delayed that long and then the salary increase isn't retroactive.
