Good tech, poor leadership - Senior Software Engineer Chewy Employee Review

Pros

Unlimited PTO policy gives you real flexibility for work-life balance. The hybrid model (3 days onsite) strikes a reasonable balance, and having the option to work from multiple office locations is a nice perk if you travel or relocate. My team was mostly co-located, which made collaboration straightforward. The technology stack is modern and well-maintained—enjoyable to work with as an engineer.

Cons

Upper management in my division consistently made poor decisions and operated with little transparency. I witnessed project managers blatantly lie, and when caught, they doubled down rather than course-correct. Promotions felt like a moving target—satisfy one goal and a new one appears out of nowhere. The company launched an AI initiative by hiring two external leaders learning AI on the job, despite having plenty of capable internal talent. Meanwhile, raises and stock options for existing employees remain underwhelming. Perhaps most telling: anonymous upward reviews repeatedly showed management receiving subpar ratings year after year. My manager received the worst scores I've ever seen—nothing changed. A VP once called a meeting after a bad review to ask us how to improve his rating. The lack of accountability is staggering.

Pros

I am an artist and I get to do an art-related job. The schedule is flexible when things pop up. I get health insurance and 401k and a lot of free food, and there is free gym access in the office building. The people I work with are all generally very cool, friendly, and/or fun to work with.

Cons

The pay rate is below the industry standard for production artists. I am not able to afford a place of my own. I live with my parents and I work another job to supplement my income. I am basically surviving and able to pay all my bills, but I would not be able to live a full life on my own with the pay rate as it is now. The work culture portrays itself as progressive and inclusive place but it is the typical corporate toxic environment.
