Pros

Entry level positions provide introductory payroll processing knowledge as long as you are motivated to learn individually.

Cons

Heavy turnover resulting in sizable gaps in working knowledge amongst operations teams. Middle management is disorganized at best; at worst, however, management is often engaging in behavior that promotes an unhealthy work environment, such as putting down other managers to dissuade collaboration, excessive micromanaging, and taking credit for the work of their team members.

We appreciate your posting these concerns and are sorry your experience at Checkwriters didn't match what we strive for! While some turnover is inevitable these days, please know that we have dozens of employees who have been here for 5, 10, and even 20 years. The podcast episode you referenced was about leveraging negative employee feedback to drive positive cultural enhancements. While the hosts presented the information in a lighthearted way, they also encouraged HR leaders to look at employee reviews as a chance to improve the employee experience - and that's exactly what we'll do with your feedback. We wish you all the best in your next role!

Pros

There have been drastic improvements over the last few years to increase internal training (across all teams) and break down the silos amongst teams. Our internal communication has grown tremendously over the last few years and it shows!! Working in a face paced environment is where I thrive so this is the perfect place if you thrive in those types of environments too! Everyone is so helpful and has each others backs at the end of the day. There are years of knowledge spread across the teams so lots of resources at everyone’s disposal. I have never feel more “at home” than I do here. The atmosphere is a comfortable friendly environment where you can banter professionally and express concerns openly without judgment. Managers listen to their employees concerns & life hardships.

Cons

This is currently an improvement being worked on so not necessarily a con but the lack of internal written knowledge is challenging for some at times but is growing more and more robust!

Pros

Checkwriters does a good job at welcoming new employees. They put systems in place where you are able to meet new co-workers, and quite frankly very nice people. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, and I love the building.

Cons

A company that is family operated has its quirks. There is always going to be a bit of favoritism, and a bit of a "strong" view on things. Checkwriters is far beyond that. Department relations are not good, and any ideas that differ from the family's get you shut down, and some times in trouble. Many projects are left unfinished because a family member jumps in last minute. People walk on eggshells in the office because of fear of judgment. It is a scary operation to be a part of. They preach about equity and connection, but in reality, they don't practice it. Even despite guidelines they claim to adhere to. The higher-ups run a Youtube podcast where they praise companies that perform massive lay-offs, strip away DEI, and require on-site work. Oh yeah, be afraid to work remotely. They let you, but you will often hear about how you are not as valued (just listen to the podcast).

Hello! We appreciate your taking the time to share your experience at Checkwriters. It’s great to hear that you’ve enjoyed aspects of our onboarding process, our people, and the work environment. We’d also like to address your concerns. Open communication is important at Checkwriters, and we encourage employees to share feedback with leadership. While not every idea can be implemented, many recent initiatives have come directly from employee input. Leadership and Culture: Checkwriters is a privately-held company with a leadership team of about 18, three of whom are from the same family. We strive to ensure decision-making is based on collaboration and what’s best for both our employees and the company as a whole. Importantly, being a family-owned organization is viewed positively by the majority of our employees and a significant reason for choosing to work here over more corporate options! Podcast and Company Policies: Two of our managers host the 'HR Leaders Lounge' - a popular video podcast in the HR, Business, and Leadership space. The show covers trending and newsworthy topics impacting business leaders. While some discussions may spark debate, the goal is to cover relevant topics in an engaging, 'edutainment' style, not dictate Checkwriters’ policies. Remote Work at Checkwriters: We value our remote employees and appreciate their significant contributions to our organization over the years. Many have been with us for over a decade. While remote work is a hot topic in the business world and often discussed on the podcast, it does not reflect Checkwriters’ stance on valuing employees who work remotely. We’re glad you took the time to leave this review, and we hope to continue improving the employee experience at Checkwriters. If you’d like to discuss these concerns further, our leadership team is always open to conversation!
