Pros

Flexible hours and a laidback atmosphere can make this an OK place to work. Project work can be unique, exciting, and challenging. In most cases you are supported by likeminded colleagues who are smart and passionate about their work. I believe the greatest asset of this company is the support staff – they are fantastic. A typical “scientist” will stay busy writing proposals and will lead or support multiple projects. “Engineers” will often perform much of the work and support several projects at once.

Cons

In my opinion, despite the company’s strengths, due to inconsistent leadership and a lack of self-awareness among management this is a very challenging and uncomfortable place to work. There seems to be few mentoring opportunities, so it can be a tough place if you’re recently out of school or transitioning from another field. The company’s lack of self-awareness combined with little to no accountability for personal behavior, even when behavior is appallingly inappropriate, can result in an atmosphere that is dysfunctional and unhealthy. Bottomline, bullying by co-workers and managers alike is common. Sadly, HR are either not empowered, or simply unequipped to handle these types of issues. This may explain the high turnover rate. Project work can feel like it lacks purpose. As with any company ymmv.

Pros

R&D environment with many small projects and ‘all hands on deck’ culture is good for gaining exposure to new technologies, building up a diverse skillset and learning about the business side of R&D. Opportunities for self-direction and ownership for enthusiastic proposal writers. Excellent opportunity for early career engineers/scientists hoping to build up a technical foundation.

Cons

As the company’s bread & butter, R&D proposal wins are King, and technical excellence is valued only insofar as it enables these wins. Funding opportunities are typically small and fragmented, rarely offering room for achieving the critical mass needed to truly create something of lasting value/impact. Good for research and learning, poor for developing products. The company has made unusual decisions regarding the administration of its IT infrastructure in a bid to mimic their expectation of how larger defense primes would operate, sacrificing development speed and thereby one of the few advantages a small business has over larger established players. The company has become highly adverse to taking on risk, and which is a major hurdle to growth.
