The pay was far below industry standard and senior level work loads were expected from every developer, while paying below the industry standard wages for every level. The expected hours were astronomical at times and contributed to an unmanageable work-life balance. Management rarely backed up staff with clients, causing a stressful development and training cycle. Lack of training for the job you are expected to perform (train clients, develop new clients, support, etc.) and lack of accessible resources to spend time learning. The location in a small town did not help.
