Pros

Through my time working at this place I worked with some phenomenal people. My former co-workers are the only reason I had any issue leaving because they were great people to be around. The benefits you receive with working in a government type job were amazing (i.e. insurance coverage and PTO).

Cons

The downside of working at this establishment is that there is a major communication issue with administration. You want answers on whether or not something can be done (programming or simply decorating a display because patrons love displays and admin. hate them) forget about it. You will never receive a straightforward answer, you'll hear multiple and never get clarification. Administration tends to be gossipy and snoop around, but when there is an actual issue no one tends to take care of it at the time until it makes them look good. The safety of staff became a big issue and it was constantly swept under the rug. Multiple horrid interactions with badly behaving patrons and nothing was ever really done to make improvements for the next time. I got along great with all front line staff, it was like we were one big team and people would stand up for one another and cover when needed, but it is like you are constantly fighting a battle with administration to communicate or to get a task done. HR was not good, I felt like I could never go there. Unprofessional is the best description; never offered the right information when I did have questions so I had to ask the State of Maryland for answers.

Pros

This is a good job for those that are interested in a Library Career or just need a job. They will hire with no experience as long as you have your degree depending on the position. Most frontline staff are friendly and are willing to help those without experience to gain experience.

Cons

The funding for the library system is low meaning you have a little budget and a low salary/hourly wage. Even with a small budget and low pay, the library system has high expectations for staff that aren't realistic with the limited time and resources that are provided. Your off-desk time for getting work done isn't guaranteed and working on desk it not allowed. It's expected for you to do work at home occasionally while being off the clock (book club preparations, learning the collection, etc.). If you have experience, it won't matter. You'll get paid the same amount as someone that is new to the field. You will never exceed expectations on performance reviews because merit raises aren't guaranteed. Your hours won't be consistent, you'll work mornings, evenings, and weekends. There claims to be an open-door policy, but it is not taken seriously. You can discuss concerns, ideas, or issues, but you will never receive feedback and be told "If you are not happy here, then you can leave". For an organization with less than 100 employees, the communication is not great. Cross department communication is frowned upon. Changes are made suddenly without any explanation. There is no room for growth due to limited positions and only certain people getting chosen for promotional positions.
