Pros

Free lunch is a nice perk

Cons

I honestly don’t know where to begin. My experience at CarGurus was nothing short of a nightmare, and it’s all thanks to the toxic leadership that has been allowed to fester within the company. There’s absolutely no clear vision for the future, and it’s painfully obvious in how things are handled day-to-day. In less than two years, one leader alone has let go of at least six people, and the cycle of elimination shows no signs of stopping. It’s clear that anyone who dares to question these decisions becomes a target. Those who challenge the status quo are slowly tortured with miserable treatment until they eventually find themselves out the door. It’s disheartening to see good, hard-working people who care about the company get crushed by this leadership style. On top of that, there’s another leader who takes the cake for sheer bullying and verbal harassment. If you ask questions or fail to meet expectations that are vague at best, you’ll find yourself on the receiving end of toxic, condescending comments and belittling behavior. Instead of fostering an environment where people can grow, it’s a culture of fear and manipulation where any sign of weakness is exploited.

We agree the $15 a day in-office lunch stipend is a great perk! Not sure when you left CarGurus but conveying our vision is hugely important to us—in fact, we just hosted a Kickoff Week to get people familiar with and excited about what’s ahead. We hope you were able to talk to your HRBP about your other concerns. They strongly value employee input and want people to feel supported and be successful.

Pros

Having completed my first three months as a Senior Engineering Manager, my experience has been very positive so far. Excellent Culture: The organization fosters a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive culture where people are encouraged to share ideas, challenge assumptions, and work together toward common goals. Leadership is approachable, and there is a strong focus on transparency and continuous improvement. Great Team: I have had the opportunity to work with a highly talented, knowledgeable, and supportive team. Everyone is willing to help, share expertise, and contribute to collective success, making onboarding and collaboration seamless. Technology-Forward and Innovation-Driven, The company embraces modern technologies and remains technology-agnostic, selecting the best tools and platforms for the problem at hand rather than being tied to specific vendors. The organization is proactive in exploring emerging technologies, including cloud, platform engineering, and AI, which creates an exciting environment for learning and innovation. Overall, my first three months have reinforced that this is a great place to grow professionally while working on meaningful and technically challenging initiatives.

Cons

The hybrid work model requires employees to be in the office three days per week, which may not suit everyone. However, I personally appreciate the opportunity to collaborate face-to-face, build relationships, and connect with colleagues. Combined with the office perks and supportive environment, I do not currently have any major cons to report.
