Pros

Good peer group of scientists who are motivated Interesting projects Opportunity to make real difference to lives of most vulnerable

Cons

Management is callous, they make well functioning jobs redundant without thinking through consequences for the staff and organisation. No proper redressal systems in place Too much politics and infighting, when the mission of the organisation is critical Much too donor driven, donors impose their narrow vision and management agrees

Pros

Meaningful work with dedicated, intelligent colleagues. Nice balance between scholarly freedom and research for development. Research support systems are strong. Access to significant bilateral donor funding.

Cons

Fundraising is a necessity and sometimes feels like it takes more of your time than research. The organization is currently in transition and tends to undergo reforms every 5 years. National and international staff divisions can feel unjust.
