"Run by the same old gang. Systemic change not likely" (just like 2015 comment!) - Anonymous employee CGIAR Employee Review

Pros

Dedicated middle management and technical staff

Cons

It's the old gang in Research and a boys club in Operations. Change ("ONE CGIAR", all centers to merge) currently pushed by donors with such rush that it's simple abusive of staff...on a pandemic year!! It's all about directors and "international staff" negotiating their golden parachutes and sweet packages in new positions. Zero consideration for the entire workforce. Backward looking and afraid of learning from the outside. Afraid of bringing outside experienced people to lead. Like the 2015 comment said, same old gang...positions won't be earned but gifted. It is not about what you know and your experience but who you know.

Pros

Meaningful work with dedicated, intelligent colleagues. Nice balance between scholarly freedom and research for development. Research support systems are strong. Access to significant bilateral donor funding.

Cons

Fundraising is a necessity and sometimes feels like it takes more of your time than research. The organization is currently in transition and tends to undergo reforms every 5 years. National and international staff divisions can feel unjust.
