Pros

Great education benefits. If you are willing to stay in one department for life an you have a great area lead; the possibilities are seemingly endless. There are loads of cultural events that come through which lends itself to magnificent traffic jams from time to time.

Cons

I will start off by saying that depending on where you work the environment can be wonderful. If you want any recognition for your work or expect raises; this is not the place for you. When I started the environment was rapidly changing. Then certain areas constricted and the work was redistributed. Never was there a raise, stipend or other pay allowance for the additional workload. Management has constantly changed, and please do not go to human resources for assistance. I have watched person after person disappear after seeking assistance due to severe harassment. The campus just last year realized that after 20 years they were horribly out of compliance as nearly all non faculty employees were classified as salary. I watched person after person get lost in the shuffle and no matter how I tried to go to management for my area it was all just swept under the rug. When the switch was made many in management denied the possibility of overtime being allowed and many crumbled trying to keep up the pace of their work in the newly slotted 37.5 work week. This seems like it was great, but in reality you were expected to complete everything in the shortened time or you would just not get paid for the extra hours worked; at least not in my area. There were several people that were denied the ability to move departments for better opportunities as their managers would not approve the switch.

Pros

Wonderful lab culture. Great learning environment. Opportunities to grow laboratory technique skills and work independently on solo project. Many chances to present findings at data meetings or poster conferences. If you are an undergraduate looking for research experience, look into what each professor is researching, reach out to them, and be yourself. They want to teach people who are open to learning and willing to try new things.

Cons

Takes a lot of time. You need to invest in what the professor is researching, read previous literature published to get familiar with the research topic and hypothesis. Not a lot of networking opportunities, so you have to be the one to initiate and find them yourself.
