Pros

1. Enthusiastic and talented colleagues. The socially good nature of the product and startup atmosphere attracts a highly motivated cadre of employees - I've learnt a lot from some of my colleagues. People will genuinely try their best to help you out if you need it 2. Minimal bureaucracy and high autonomy. I had a lot of freedom in terms of what approach I could take to solve a problem as my direct management took a relatively hands off approach. Unlike the large corporates that many of my friends work out, Busuu's organisational structure has not yet fossilised into an anti-pattern 3. Strong growth outlook. While not achieving the stellar growth of Duolingo (a very high bar), Busuu has sustained a healthy level of growth for the last half-decade. This leads to a lot of interesting challenges as you can be sure that you'll be dealing with bigger data next year than this year. 4. A strong, socially good product. Looking for a tech job in London that doesn't relate to finance can feel like a challenge sometimes. However, Busuu has a product that does actually improve peoples lives in some way. With the acquisition of Verbling (an online language tuition platform) you can arguably go from having no understanding of a language to a conversational level purely using Busuu products 5. Data driven culture. Every company claims to have this but often it's just spin and the company is actually driven by the ideological whims of senior management. Busuu is the closest to actually being data driven that I've seen - most changes to the app are AB tested and performance metrics are scrutinised

Cons

1. Chronically understaffed/high workload. Busuu's engineering department just has too few too small a headcount and you will feel this in the amount of ad-hoc requests you will receive. Earlier in my time at Busuu this was because of high employee churn (as some previous reviewers mention) but this has improved somewhat and now is due to extremely sluggish hiring - which could indicate that perhaps compensation is not up to market standards. I sometimes felt trapped in a negative loop where I didn't have enough time to tackle tech debt because of the workload - which down the line leads to an even higher workload! 2. Erratically fast moving, constantly shifting targets. The culture that leads to minimal bureaucracy and Busuu's startup atmosphere does have its downsides. I think Busuu is often too keen to move onto the next big thing, or to chase the next hot metric rather than learnings its lessons and iterating on what already exists. 3. Tech debt. Busuu is a surprisingly old company and its technology still bears the awkward legacy of some ill-considered decisions. To be fair, its impossible to not acquire any tech debt and the senior tech leadership is pushing initiatives to modernise the tech stack. However, these initiatives are months or years away from completion As a final gripe, the bonus is a function of overall company performance and is essentially a lottery because you're not going to change the top line performance of the company as a worker in the leaf of the organisation chart.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Busuu, we truly appreciate it. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed working with your colleagues and enjoyed the autonomy of your role. Both of these are important to us and we are glad to hear that it's been an important part of your journey. Busuu is a fast-paced hyper-growth company, which is embracing the change of the industry and technology in general and adapting to the ways. Busuu has gone through a lot of changes in its 13 years history and adapted to changes in the industry and technology. We are continuously trying to evolve and stay up-to-date with our ways of working, technology, and product. The bonus structure depends on company performance, as we truly believe that we work as a team and everyone should be rewarded fairly across organizations. Every single employee contributes to the success of the product and it's important to us as an employer to recognize that. Again, thank you so much for sharing your feedback and we wish you all the best in your career journey.

Pros

- The new management is very nice and understanding. - I've noticed that even when I provide all the necessary information when canceling a lesson, they still have to repeat steps, likely due to company policy. - The only reason I stay is because I absolutely love my students. - It can be challenging to find a job without a degree in the TEFL industry

Cons

-Asked for a raise, completely ignored me. -Very difficult to cancel lessons. -Don't know how well you're doing as a teacher so you're in constant "competition" with other teachers to keep your position. -I've heard that they can fire you without any notice or reason. -Changed policy that you can only do 25 hours per week
