Pros
There are definitely pros to the merchandiser job. You have no management looking over you shoulder constantly. You drive your own vehicle in each area. You get paid mileage. You can start as early as your stores are open. If you plan your time efficiently enough on certain days you can be home early. The satisfaction you feel when you merchandise your stores to your liking and leave knowing it was done right. The majority of the people you meet are great and genuine people.
Cons
Now the cons….in the past few months our schedules have changed. This change can be seen as good or bad depending on who you are. We work 7 days straight and have Wednesday and Thursday off. After that we work 8 days straight and get Saturday through Tuesday off. Reading that sounds great right? A 4 day weekend once a month. Let me just say this job can be very physically and mentally exhausting. You will give all the energy you have to the job and have nothing left when you get home, especially working that many days in a row. Some days will only be 8 hours but others could be 12 or 13. You will be pulling heavy pallets through the stores, lifting, bending, squatting. Sometimes the pallets are stacked over 6 feet tall and things will drop on you occasionally if you’re short. If you are a woman doing well the good old boys club (whether it be store employees or your own co workers) will try to swoop in and find something wrong with anything you do. We are understaffed and the managers are always having to cover routes and take on extra stores. Due to that there is little to no help if needed. You may work behind other people that decided not to do their job the right way and that work then falls onto you. All in all it’s a decent for now job , but as a career it’s not where it’s at.
