A Slippery Slope - Manager Brooklyn Data Employee Review

Pros

BDC is still holding on to being a humane consulting organization. The company grew fast and earned a reputation in the data community based on some very talented people and a few high profile engagements. There are real opportunities to work a ~40 hour work week as a consultant, and the People team is very good about communication and DE&I. I trust many of the Individual Contributors and Managers to produce good work.

Cons

Leadership is slowly stripping away what makes BDC unique, leading to heavy turnover. Due to a recent merger there have been a lot of structural changes and communication has been late and/or sloppy for nearly all of them. A promotion freeze that will end up lasting 8 months was barely announced, with no targeted end date announced for months. Key staff members have left the company with barely any communication about how to replace them. Employees used to be allocated 8 hours per week for Learning & Development + an appropriate budget (part of the reason I joined!), but this hourly allocation is being whittled away. With the recent and upcoming changes, it is hard to see how employees will be able to grow at BDC. 3 stars might be more fair than two based purely on my experience, but many pledges were made during my interview process about support, promotions, etc that were nearly immediately proven false, hence my lower rating. Given that these statements were directly from the leadership team there is no excuse for not being aware of the impending changes.

Pros

Some of the best data professionals I’ve ever worked with. The standard of work here is great, and there is so much to learn from the people here. Work life balance is respected, though there are definitely some busy periods. A lot of upper management have families and are very understanding of being flexible with one’s schedule Interesting clients who trust us a great deal Company values are evident in the way they treat their employees

Cons

Some projects can be improperly staffed, which makes the manager or high performing ICs shoulder the burden of figuring out a solution It sometimes feels like a startup, which can be a pro (flexible, quick to adapt), but also a con (can be asked to do much more than your job description). Though you’re only expected to log 40 hours a week, with breaks and refractory period between meetings it can easily feel like a 50hour work week on the regular.
