Pros

Some decent incentives for staff generally.

Cons

There are very few positive aspects that I have taken from my time at Brethertons. The ethos is very poor as is the working environment. Colleagues are quick to pour high levels of work with very little to no training. The culture is horrendous and salary levels are very low for a mid sized firm. I get the impression from most of my close colleagues that they were simply there because they were trapped with mortgage and bills but dreamed they could leave. I always felt conscious of targets as a non fee earner and thought the billing structure was awful. Lawyers doing law is absolutely false, lawyers do law, bills, finance, accounts, compliance, admin, post duties and many other aspects which I found quite embarrassing really. As a legal assistant I was given the bare minimum responsibility but huge work levels. I quickly decided that Brethertons was not the legal environment I wanted to progress in. The offices are horrid, damp, dark and very hazardous it just is not a professional environment.

Pros

Staff are generally open, there is no micromanagement so long as work gets done. Annual Development Appraisals are carried out to find out one's aspirations and there seems to be genuine effort to help people progress. The firm can pay for courses / training, but it is dependant on a case-by-case basis.

Cons

The pay is on the lower end, though it is expected as the position is considered entry level and does not usually require a law degree (though it's advantageous).
