For people considering Boom, in the rare times we’ve had to let someone go (we reviewed our stats – this has only happened to a relatively small number of individuals, representing 6% of all hires over 7+ years) we try to make it explicitly clear to the individual if she/he is not meeting expectations (including written performance improvement plans and very candid feedback from managers). We never want it to be a surprise in the unfortunate times that it’s not working out. Our managers are told that if a team member who is let go is surprised by it, we haven’t communicated clearly enough leading up to the decision. So in this case, it appears we indeed weren’t clear enough despite our intentions to do so. We’ll share this with our managers and will strive to do better here.
