Pros

There are genuinely great people who work here. 75% of the company is friendly, fun and kind. Great place to learn as you end up diving straight into the thick of things. Free food quarterly for company meetings Holiday party in the winter, Summer Picnic Family Oriented New campus is beautiful and cafe/buffet isn’t too bad Free kombucha and coffee

Cons

Parts of upper management and certain employees who have been with the company since inception are resistant to change. They cling to ineffective processes, unrealistic employee expectations, and give any excuse to blame someone else for their incompetencies. Lots of people with great titles who are wildly unqualified for running entire departments but are given director and senior VP positions simply for accepting the lower than industry pay for 10-15 years. They treat other departments and their own poorly and most company processes and workflow are crippled due to their inefficiencies. HR and upper management give false promises on career progression and pay is so extremely low that it leads to steady turnover. HR claims the turnover is due to “good” job market with high employment rates, but in actuality the numbers are 2-3 times previous years but percentage seems the same given the company has nearly grown 25% each year in the past 4-5 years. 10% turnover for a 200 person company is not the same as 10% for a 600 person company and it shouldn’t be that way. I’ve heard horror stories of mid year and end of year reviews where people asked for more than a 1-3% raise and HR called them greedy and that if they wanted to make more money, they should consider another company. They also don’t fire anyone unless you do something completely egregious or illegal. Lots of great hardworking people leave because of low pay and under appreciation because of arbitrary position salary caps and no upward mobility so essentially all you are left with is a large majority of lazy workers who are happy to be at a biotech company and spend all day on YouTube and facebooking.

BioLegend Response

I am sorry your experience with BioLegend hasn't been more positive. The 'pros' you list above are great aspects of working here and I agree that the people are our biggest asset. As to your constructive feedback, I would definitely love to hear more details so I openly invite you to reach out to me to discuss further. I don't fully understand your argument surrounding turnover because as we grow, we will see a larger raw number in terms of exiting staff but looking at the percentage keeps this in perspective. This is the standard way that turnover is measured. We do compare ourselves with other life sciences companies and our turnover rate is very comparable to our peers. Of course, we would like to do better and to that end we have evaluated key aspects of our working environment including base pay and made significant adjustments in the last 6 to 9 months. I am unsure where the "HR called them greedy" feedback is coming from as I've never heard those words from anyone on my team nor have I myself said them. I agree with your point that seniority and tenure should never be the deciding factor in a promotion. We have 2 Sr. VPs in the organization and both of them I personally feel are very talented individuals that we are lucky to have on the BioLegend team. I welcome your feedback and would appreciate any details that would help us to take action. We are currently running an anonymous engagement survey so you can feel free to give your feedback there. In the meantime, I will pass along your comments to the management team for review. I wish you all the best and hope that your experience improves.

Pros

Great coworkers that were always willing to lend a hand.

Cons

The pay is absolutely horrendous compared to other bio companies' market. Losing great talent and people who want to move up/stay at the company, but they do not give their employees the pay they deserve.

Pros

There are many experienced and collaborative people at BioLegend who you can learn from. Company's growing and collaborating with other branches of Ravvity to modernize. Some managers are very hands-off that they'd allow you space to learn and work independently. Great place to learn and start out in the industry. Free fruits and Kombucha.

Cons

Don't be a high performer, aka a tall daisy, at BioLegend because there are some gangs of toxic people who will try to cut you down to make themselves look better. If you plan to be a tall daisy, take extra precaution. Most are nice and hardworking people and don't like to insert themselves into other people's business. But there are several gangs of gossipers who'd like to take very long breaks to spread dangerous rumors about others, especially the tall daisies. Even if you never interact with them and they don't know a single thing about you, they will search for a littlest thing you do, then turn that into a huge issue. They will spread rumors, distort the truth, and delete context. In your first few weeks at BL, pay extra attention to identify gossipers, people with gang-like behavior, and fiction writers. Take extra precaution when you achieve something (products release, process improvement, business deals....). Do not confront the gossipers directly because they're very good at playing victims. Needless to say, do not tell them anything about yourself. Many people in the management are aware of this issue but they just want to look away. No one wants to fix the culture at BioLegend.
