Poor middle management, no leadership, and upper management... What's that? - Store Manager Big 5 Sporting Goods Employee Review

Pros

The best thing about working for Big 5 Spring Goods for me is that I am a fixer and there is no shortage of areas that need fixing. They had very good healthcare coverage when I started working there but they reduced it for anyone hired after that time, first quarter 2012, and decreased the quality of more tenured employees shortly thereafter.

Cons

Management is selected from sales workers. While this gives employees an opportunity for growth and career advancement it also creates a closed-minded management team which has little experience outside of the company. This dramatically diminishes diversity leading to limitations in innovation, cultural growth and development, and employee satisfaction. The many drawbacks of a weak or toxic culture follow, high turnover, low morale, diminished customer service, and poorer overall experience for everyone involved.

Pros

Most employees were really fun to work with, life/work balance was great, taught me good life skills, good first job for work experience.

Cons

Barely got scheduled (pretty sure my location was way over employed), occasional rude and entitled costumers (especially during the holidays), could get very slow and boring at times, sketchy area, overal, not a great job if you're looking for something that pays well.
