Pros

People at Benevolent are kind, patient, friendly, and yet also serious about getting good work done. The vibe is start-up: mission, freedom, and innovation. Unlike many start-ups, however, employees also feel empowered to leave at 5pm and also make time for their own learning. Plus European benefits like generous holiday and parental leave. Flexible work-from-home, too. The company feels stable and nurturing, and the problems we're working on are super interesting. Finally, the high level of tech support across the company, including more lengthy collaborations between teams, is a privilege in itself. I learn so much from my colleagues all the time.

Cons

For software engineers and AI scientists, I think the pay doesn't yet compare to very big tech companies, which is who we lose our tech talent to when we have turnover. Being split over NY and London time zones can also make communication and scheduling tricky. Finally, the NY office is small compared to the London one, so NY workers can sometimes feel a bit out of sync if most of their team members are in the other time zone, or occasionally also vice versa.

Pros

The content and platform development staff are using interesting and forward-thinking models for problem solving urgent medical conditions and diseases. A generous time-off policy for all employees.

Cons

The daily operations of this office do not function well. The office lacks leadership, direction and management expertise. From day-to-day problem solving to pragmatically building a sustainable business model, this company lacks interest in actually managing and maintaining a functional business in their US Office. The business staff and administrators employed at this company lack actual experience in the roles or tasks assigned to them. The decision making often comes across as clumsy and sophomoric. This is evident in their insurance coverage (that is not administered properly and provides abysmal women’s health coverage); the relocation of their office to an inconvenient location that is hardly ADA accessible and nearly 1/4 mile nearest an MTA train stop; a lack of transparent and direct communication with HR, Operations and Administrative staff; and a high attention and focus to shallow activities labelled as “team” building, that actually mask the lack of focus or concern for prioritizing future goals and growth. I would take your talents elsewhere.
