Pros

Money. Some experience you can pad your resume with. You can make money out of college if you speak Spanish or Chinese.

Cons

No organization whatsoever. Your input is not valid, though they repeatedly say it is. Flat hierarchy translates in the office to: no one is sure of their position. Only very few people have studied insurance, and nobody can answer questions without uncertainty. There is no prior training concerning insurance and you enter without knowing anything about Medicaid or any other public benefits. There is no one to look up to for knowledge because there is only a very basic understanding of what is being done. Most of the time, employees are asked to figure out how to accomplish enrollments and other services on the job without any guidance. Too much personal business is brought in from the outside, which adds to an already very stressful position and takes away from the productivity of the customer service. Though the product they advertise sounds like it's helping people (Medicaid enrollments as well as enrollments into other public benefits) there is no training that is dedicated to conducting enrollments. Working as a call center representative was like working as a middleman, and many times I felt my work was unnecessary. It's hard to move up and achieve personal goals when everyone is struggling to achieve a goal they are not sure they can fulfill, and it's best to invest your talents in other opportunities if you can find them.

Pros

Excellent opportunity for a Business Major to get his/her hands dirty in a start up environment and really have a hand in multiple business units as a company grows. The work life balance is exceptional, and management has a very hands off approach to letting employees manage their own time and projects. Everything can be an adventure since there are no strict standards set in place or preconceived notions of how things should be done. Employees have a lot of creative liberty and freedom and your success is in your own hands for the most part. The company is constantly evolving and there are new needs that must be met on a regular basis because of those changes. Definitely putting my degree/previous management skills to work in multiple capacities.

Cons

It's a start up, so of course there are no established rules or standard operating procedures. It's a flat org hierarchy which is DEFINITELY not for everyone. There is also quite a bit of role ambiguity since the company is so new. All of the issues I have faced are a result of growing pains which are inevitable to a certain extent as companies grow to scale. The company is by no means perfect but I don't think they pretend that they are.
