Still hope for a stronger future - Senior Software Engineer BenchSci Employee Review

Pros

- There are still some great people here who care about the work and each other. - The mission is meaningful, even if execution hasn’t always lived up to it. - Some teams manage to keep a supportive and collaborative culture despite the challenges. - Good work/life balance - Compensation is fair (but doesn't scale well over time, regardless of performance)

Cons

- The company has been losing a lot of senior engineering talent, and it shows. Many of the most skilled engineers are either gone or promoted into leadership roles (including Staff roles), leaving fewer hands-on technical experts. - Morale is shaky after repeated layoffs, and it feels like we’re in constant rebuild mode. - Leadership seems to think perks (like a "fun" onsite) are the way to rebuild the company, but most employees would much rather see competitive pay, stability, and recognition (specially after years of mediocre yearly raises, even for top performers, that are generally below inflation). Note: There’s been a flood of 1-star reviews recently, many clearly written out of frustration after layoffs. While not everything is perfect (far from it), the situation isn’t entirely as bleak as those reviews, mostly driven by emotion, make it sound. At the same time, dismissing the underlying issues would be a mistake; there are serious problems that need addressing if the company wants to retain what talent it still has. I’ve worked at real 1-star companies before, and this isn’t one of them.

Pros

The "ends" do NOT justify the "means" at BenchSci. Collegiality and Teamwork trump short-term results. BenchSci technology is a paradigm shift in uncovering reagents; AI/ML scans the literature to present the essence of a publication for your review (and there's more to come).

Cons

BenchSci is 100% remote. My colleagues are so interesting that I would like to see more of them in person.

Pros

Remote work. Went to the office twice

Cons

- leadership sucks here. Not one leader would be at a leadership role in another company of decent reputation - the surviving leaders here are good at politics or they are the oldest ones remaining who are friends with the CEO. They have their own agenda and try to just play the game to get their seat at the table. They would not succeed anywhere else in the real world - there is zero pay parity. Some get such high pays and others are just blind to it. When employees talk, that is when there is a realization of the gap in pay. -they care only about employees who suck up to them and stroke their ego - their product is not the best in the business and they promote it to be something of a unicorn - company bleeds out people who are talented and now they are desperate as no one new wants to join the company - they do nothing to maintain the culture of the company - it’s the most toxic out there
