Zero Hours Contracts...but they expect more commitment? Gallery Invigilator - Gallery Assistant Barbican Centre Employee Review

Pros

It's Flexible for you, good perks discount in the cinema and theatre. Cheaper than buying a membership to the Barbican!

Cons

Not a good family feel at all. Taking ages to provide uniform makes you feel unwelcome and then there's this absurd idea that you're meant to be working a certain amount of shifts after signing a zero hours contract. How about you include a minimum number of hours in the contracts?! I was also subject to odd ideas of power from fellow employees, standing in an empty room for hours on end with nobody in the gallery is a test but it's worse when you feel like you're back at school, being reported for management for checking the time on your phone when you need to change position. It's clear that the zero hour contacts allow for some people to work there who think this is a hobby or fun thing to do when some people are trying to sustain a living.

Pros

Wonderful people and teams, creative, collaborative, excellence driven. Good pension scheme and City of London benefits.

Cons

Poor leadership & practices, lack of transparency, favouritism across SLT is a pattern that will not change, it won't be addressed and is supported from the CoL. No psychological safety.
