Hated it - PHP Developer BHS Consultants Employee Review

Pros

It's downtown - at least it's on the subway line. The CTO is a cool guy (he's a British guy that tries hard to keep the circus from falling apart) that tries to help us other developers, but you get the feeling that he's not happy with this sisyphean task.

Cons

The offices are a very uninspiring cubicle farm, and there's an especially annoying constant sound of pigeons. The bathrooms are rotting and falling apart. Everyone is in permanent CYA mode, especially the number three - who walks around like he's in charge and makes his problems everyone else's problem. The pay is on the low side. Had to work lots of weekends and evenings.

Pros

Projects are interesting(iPhone, Android, webservices, web design projects, etc). However they are SEVERELY mismanaged. A place to get your foot in the door and add experience to your resume.

Cons

Dirty office - There was/is a mice problem. It became common to wipe off mouse droppings on your desk every morning. No HR department - Senior management is "HR". They have incredibly unrealistic expectations of employees. Make sure you look at every pay cheque you receive. If they see a slight chance to cut someone's pay (legally or not) they will try to take advantage. You will be told there are no egos. This is false. The managers have the biggest egos and are not afraid to yell/curse at you in the office. Will sometimes berate employees when they are not present. They may try to sell you on the fact that you will get paid overtime for projects. This MAY be true for the first few days/weeks of a project, at which point they will tell you they have "blown the budget". Mismanaged projects - Some managers are not easily accessible. You may be looked down upon if you can't come up with the answer, or ask for help. Very unrealistic expectations placed on junior staff. Code reviews - None. It is definitely a "make it work" attitude. Not many real opportunities to significantly move in the company. To be expected as it is a small company. Low to average pay at best.

Pros

Pretty easy to get to via subway. Good food nearby

Cons

Low salary, old and dirty office and no code reviews. Senior developers were absent most of the time which made progressing on tasks frustrating.
