Wages are not competitive - Intern Software Developer Avercast Employee Review

Pros

Free soda, nice people, pretty laid back. Also, their intellectual property policy is nice, allowing for freelance and working on your own projects at home without any kind of downside.

Cons

Two things: 1) management is very keen on paying their programmers as little as they can get away with, giving college programmers a decent wage for college students AFTER a 500 hour UNPAID internship, but then offering salaries for graduating students well below $20 an hour, WAY below industry standard. If they want to keep their programmers, they need to pay real programmer salaries. 2) the management is resistant to changes in technology, something rather poor for a software company. For over 5 years, employees have recommended an upgrade in language, and changes in database to keep current, and they have just barely started to budge on it.

Pros

I have been here about a year and a half. A lot has changed in that time, and I believe it is for the good. -Free Soda and use of Kurig (both coffee and chocolate pods provided) -Birthday parties for everyone (interns included) -I have been to two Christmas parties, both were amazing. Prime Rib diner for the first, and for the second party the whole office got treated to diner and a movie (Hibachi Grill and Star Wars) -If you ask questions, you can learn anything. People are very open to conversation and suggestions. -Business trips are rare, but they are also productive and enjoyable. (Especially if Jason goes because he knows all the good restaurants) -New software coming out soon will put us ahead of the game. -It was nice that after being here full time for a bit over a year, that they decided to give me a monthly bonus to help with my privately purchased health insurance, even though they didn't have to. -Avercast has not been around that long, so I get to feel like I am helping the team build something new from the ground up.

Cons

The pay is a bit low compared to what a college professor might suggest as a starting rate, but for South East Idaho it is about what I have seen everywhere else except for the INL. But I like not being on government contract. Also, since this is a relatively newer company, I feel like the pay out will be in the long run, after it builds up and thrives.
