Pros

free lunch on a Thursday

Cons

I was part of the commercial team which has a toxic, bullying culture and gets through more staff than the prison service (the job makes you feel like you are an inmate). The company has no product right now after a huge shift in market focus. Since the switch to lab automation, they are only trying to copy competitors' products but producing rubbish that is at least 5 years out of date and promising customers that one day they will deliver. Nobody in the company has any experience in bioscience and even when they have hired experience they are being told the product is terrible, one guy even joined for a month before he saw the light and got out. The product team don't listen to any feedback and sticks their head in the sand, hoping and praying that one day someone buys something. I know at least 3 other employees were managed out of the business by management, they throw performance management plans around like school reports to get people to leave, if you push back they just bully you until they get their own way. If you are thinking about a job here, DON'T, I don't think the company will be around for much longer, irrespective of what lies they might spin to you in an interview.

Pros

Automata offers flexibility in working hours, a highly autonomous environment, and an international team with a global mindset.

Cons

If you want to work at Automata, be aware that there is breakneck change in leadership and strategy. This is not a place to get comfortable, and your job might not be safe for long.

Pros

Compensation is at or above industry standards, and the benefits package is genuinely exceptional. My direct peers are a huge plus. They’re friendly, collaborative, and always ready to help, creating a tight, reliable team environment.

Cons

Managers and executives often appear disconnected from the day to day reality. Feedback passed up the chain of command tends to stall because leadership is constantly putting out fires, which leaves thoughtful input unheard. It's the "we'll get to it later" attitude, a temporary solution always ends up permanent. Projects are regularly oversold and underdelivered, and successful customer outcomes are rare. Industry sentiment reflects this. When clients or competitors hear the company name, the reaction isn’t positive. Product quality in both hardware and software leans heavily toward aesthetics and vision rather than core functionality, even though customers primarily need something that works. The company talks about “good enough” being acceptable, but too often that translates into subpar work slipping through. Quality checks are limited across departments, and quick, flashy outputs are rewarded more than taking the extra time to deliver something truly solid.
