Pros

I've always believed fully that every person at AO is doing their best to do right by each other. The organization feels more like a co-op to me than a top-down business. Even when there's tension among teams or between leadership and makers, it's clear that everyone involved is trying to align on the common goals of doing good, interesting work well for fair compensation. There's lots of mentorship. There's opportunity to progress and take on new roles if you look for it. And there's space to just lean in to your craft and stay put, too. This org is not perfect, and sometimes I disagree with the decisions being made, but I don't think there's an organization on earth that can make every person happy with every choice all the time and still stay in business.

Cons

You get pretty limited say in what projects get picked up, so sometimes you have to find ways to make a dull gig interesting- the managing partners do listen and do their best to match people with projects that they enjoy, but sometimes other constraints win. It's true that you could probably make a higher salary via a remote job for a huge product company, but I think that working face to face with good people is worth the difference. And at the end of the day, billable hours are what keeps the lights on, so it can sometimes be tough to make a case for activities and benefits that chip away at them (e.g. leave, outreach activities)

Pros

One of the best things about Atomic is the culture of trust. You’re truly treated like an adult. People believe in your judgment, and you have the freedom to make decisions without being micromanaged. The team itself is made up of incredibly smart, thoughtful, and genuinely kind people, which makes collaboration both easy and enjoyable. Leadership is also a huge strength. They consistently show up with a “high support” mentality and really invest in helping you succeed. The work stays interesting because every client, industry, and problem space is different. It feels like constant learning in the best way. There’s also a sense of openness and transparency across the company that’s refreshing, and you usually know the “why” behind decisions. And the flexibility, both in schedule and in how you approach your work, creates a healthy balance that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Cons

There isn’t a lot of structure at Atomic, and while that can be freeing, it can also be challenging depending on your working style. If you’re someone who needs clear processes or step-by-step guidance, you may find yourself creating that structure on your own. In my role, I enjoy that independence, but I can see how it could feel overwhelming to others. The pace can also be fast, simply because consulting requires constant context switching and adapting to new clients. It keeps things interesting, but it can be tiring. Another mixed bag is growth. I’m constantly learning, and I’m encouraged to expand my skillset and deepen my expertise within my role. That part is genuinely great. But at the same time, there isn’t really another role to grow into. In my position, development mostly happens within the boundaries of the job itself. So while there’s plenty of personal and professional growth, the path upward is less defined simply because there aren’t many additional steps in the ladder.

Pros

The Accelerator Program is built around direct peer-to-peer mentorship. From day one I was staffed on a full-time, real-world project with multiple senior developers, all of which were ready to aid in my development as a software consultant and developer. I started the position without any technical experience outside of my college degree. This was the expectation and I didn't feel like I was missing out by coming in with different experience. The focus on in-person collaboration made it even easier to see what it was like to be a software consultant and developer. The variety of different projects that I've worked on has made me a well rounded professional and has exposed me to more technologies, problems, and people than any typical product company would. I feel that my time at Atomic Object has truly accelerated my career, skills, and experience surpassing other professionals with similar time in the workforce.

Cons

The type of work that Atomic does might not be for everyone. Consulting means switching projects relatively often. Folks looking for the same day-to-day job might not be a good fit for consulting. The emphasis on in person collaboration means living close to the office, and being in office regularly. If you don't see yourself making that commute every day then Atomic Object might not be a good fit.
