FACULTY: Know what you are getting into before you start here! - Assistant Professor Arizona State University Employee Review

Pros

The university really tries to make it possible for everyone to attend university no matter where a student comes from or what their readiness is. The tuition benefit is a nice perk! My family is here because of the tuition for our kids, otherwise we would be long gone. Even though the state of Arizona is an "at will" state, there is some job security as long as you do your job.

Cons

Know that pay is terrible compared to the ABOR-approved peer institutions. There are no real prospects to advance your career because it is a crapshoot! Advancement opportunities are kind of dangled like a carrot to a donkey in a parched desert. Make sure you negotiate your salary well because it won't change much no matter how long you stay here or how high you perform. The staff turnover is very high and that leads to a very impersonal environment. When people quit be ready to pick up lots of slack. If you are lucky, the management MIGHT thank you for filling in the staffing gaps. Many employees are demoralized with the "top-down , do it or else" environment but they seem to plod along for the tuition benefit.

Pros

Highly interactive job where you meet lots of different students and form connections

Cons

I don't like the administration changes that they have implemented in 2026. It more dictatorial now and tutor who are the face of their organization are not given much voice.
