Pros

Standard 401k with matching. (Eligibility for matching begins one year post probationary period). Standard Medical + Dental Insurance Vacation increased based on years of service. Standard vacation rate for years 1 & 2

Cons

Annette can be passive aggressive when stressed or annoyed. She'll 9 out of 10 apologize if it's obvious she was unprofessional. There were unpaid interns at the firm when it was no longer legal. She was not aware. She does not have the patience to educate herself on labor codes or HR topics but also doesn't have an HR person (and no, your accountant doesn't count). Gets off on cheap labor with high-quality product/work ethic, vendors and employees alike. For someone who isn't NCIDQ certified and didn't finish college, it's ironic that she prefers graduated interns with experience. Overall lots of ego. Responds emotionally. Gaslights you when you speak up. If that doesn’t get her point across, she likes to share what her husband thinks as if that’s supposed to change your mind. Certainly a place you can learn from if you're starting off but not a place to stay unless you can handle boundaries being crossed because, you know...we're family. Speaking up about issues or asking for what's legally required is frowned upon unless it's coming from someone she values and doesn't want to look bad in front of them. Statistically has underpaid women of color. Quiet firing - or tactics used to push you to leave without them having to fire you. Discrimination in Violation of FEHA, and Failure to Indemnify was the basis of the lawsuit that was put together by my attorney. I decided not to go through with the process. At the time, I didn't have the mental bandwidth or the energy to go through a lawsuit with someone like Annette English.

Pros

I worked two years full time at AE&A as an intermediate interior designer before leaving to pursue other career aspirations. Above all things, it was a safe and comfortable environment to show up to work every day. Having worked at previous firms where the management ran the firms with an authoritarian hand (borderline sexual harassment in many instances), it was a blessing to be able to wake up everyday not only unafraid to head into work, but looking forward to it. My relationship to the entire team very much felt like a second family to me because the culture was built on encouraging self-development in one another. The firm would schedule fun company-paid "team outings" from brunch to pottery classes, and even sky-diving. The firm's founder and owner, Annette, has an open-door policy and she was incredibly kind and generous with her flexibility and willingness to listen to staff suggestions and concerns. I never felt afraid to approach her to discuss anything. When I felt overwhelmed with a full-time schedule and a lengthy commute, she was so receptive to my thoughts and feelings - and allowed me to modify my schedule on a trial run. She was so generous as to even sponsor me for a weekend self-development seminar course in Culver City that truly transformed my outlook on life. I've never worked for someone who cared enough to invest so much into my personal growth. In terms of design work, there was always plenty of interesting ongoing projects that ran the gamut of high-rise condos, major remodels, and new builds (while I was there...collaborations with renown architects like Landry, Paul McClean, and Studio William Hefner). There was a lot of variation in design aesthetics project to project, which meant that was always an opportunity to learn and grow as a designer. 401K matching.

Cons

Accessible street parking around the office was difficult to find (especially on certain street sweeping days). Often times had to park and walk from over four blocks away.

Pros

Great work environment, fairly managed, and organized.

Cons

Most of the teams work great. My team did not and the owner couldn’t see that the project manager was not doing their job, leading to juniors to have more responsibility. Compensation is not great.
