Pros

There is a printing press onsite. There is a Stewart's nearby. Port Jackson Media, the parent company, also publishes weeklies.

Cons

Its Amsterdam. Other than Stewart's, nothing nearby. The press room smells like toxic paint fumes and can make you feel sick. The office is a dump. The executive editor has been there since 1982 and doesn't take kindly to newcomers. The reporters often "report" what they overhear the other reporters say to the boss, basically backstabbing each other. High turnover. No lunch breaks. No overtime even for hours worked over 40. No pay raises. Life insurance policies eligible for employees after one year worked, though the policies are active only if they "die on the job," according to the business office. The weeklies Sacandaga Express, Adirondack Express and Hamilton County News and are just a rehash of the stories previously published in The Recorder. They often do layoffs around the holidays to clean up their accounting books for the fiscal year. The publishers watch and listen to what the employees are saying via a surveillance system of computers and microphones throughout the building. Health insurance benefits available after three months of employment, though if you elect the benefits, you will likely be fired.
