"Revenue is Job One" (not the laudible mission) - Anonymous employee American Humane Employee Review

Pros

There are many people who are passionate about the work of protecting children and animals, strengthening families, and recognizing the unique bonds of human-animal interaction. The work environment is collaborative and mid-level managers consistently praise good work.

Cons

As others have indicated, the environment has become extremely strained for those not in the close-knit circle of the CEO. This CEO has been implementing significant cultural and organizational changes since her hire date (10/1/2011), with little to no communication about them. Her one consistent message to staff of this formerly mission-driven non-profit has literally been, "Revenue is Job One!" She appears to spend exorbitant amounts while slashing program budgets, e.g., renting a lexus for herself, taking out a NYTimes full page ad covering a single AHA program, unilaterally naming two "National Ambassadors" who are likely receiving fees to serve in that role, and paying for a TV celebrity to attend a lavish DC Open House. Diversity also has been notably absent from her choices. She hired several of her friends and colleagues for senior-level positions she created. She then fired at least five more people, including two senior managers.

Pros

I applied for an opening and from the moment I received the first email from the recruiter, all the way through the interviews, follow-up conversations, and offer, to the welcome and onboarding process, my experience has been so positive and inspiring. I am thrilled to join this organization and the team. They have a big vision for truly making a difference for animals everywhere, along with talented and dedicated people.

Cons

I don't see any cons.

Pros

Talented and dedciated individuals within its programs. However, there is minimal tangible impact on actual animal support, and coworker relationships often stem from shared experiences of adversity and trauma,

Cons

Working at American Humane has damaged the lives and minds of so many amazing, dedicated individuals. This environment not only demoralizes but also damages the mental health of the staff. Employees face constant manipulation, abuse, and extreme pressure that pushes them to their limits. Despite many joining with the intention to advocate for animal welfare, the true mission is overshadowed by the CEO's fragile ego-centric agenda and her obsession with appearing to be a "celebrity," detracting from the organization's core objectives and the well-being of its team. I generally do not write reviews, but if this saves even one person from experiencing the trauma of working at American Humane, then it is absoutely worthwhile.
