Pros

Smart, capable crew of really experienced Hadoop and Spark experts who have worked at places like Yahoo, Google, LinkedIn, and Oracle. Company revenue is growing quarter by quarter, newer customers are larger brand names that even your parents have heard of, customers are pretty happy. Pay is competitive, benefits are good, and it's close to Caltrain. Hours are flexible and "work from home Wednesday" policy helps. Increasingly recognized as a real player in the Big Data space. Looks like we're headed into a "rationalization" in Silicon Valley, and this place has a good shot at being a winner.

Cons

Open office environment is a plus sometimes, a real drag at others. Headphones are key. Company recently experienced a moderate re-org. Rent in the Palo Alto area is a bit rough, many people have long commutes. Sometimes they say yes to crazy customer demands too often.

Pros

Very collaborative and supporting team with very smart team members.

Cons

At times certain areas look over engineered and could be simplified.

Pros

Experienced management who have all done successful startups before. Management is fairly accessible, with a weekly all-hands meeting and a regular all-hands offsite. Great team of Hadoop engineers, operators and architects. If anyone can make Hadoop run smoothly, this team can. There are plenty of perks, including Friday lunches, flexible hours, unlimited vacation, and snacks/drinks. The company has many customers, and they seem to be happy. It seems most are increasing their purchases over time.

Cons

Altiscale is not immune to the typical challenges of a startup. Sales are not landing as fast as the company had hoped, which has led to a layoff. Management continues to work on the product mix, moving up-stack in an attempt to sell to the business versus IT, forcing us to develop product and land customers at the same time. It's a juggling act that makes it difficult for everyone in the company. These cons are real, but they are pretty typical of a startup.
