Pros

I worked two wedding seasons, May - October. Or rather, I worked one season and started a second season before deciding to quit a month into it. The venue is beautiful and has a good reputation. Generally guests are pleasant and you get to witness some really wonderful moments. Moments like these, a touching speech or first dance, make the job worth it. The camaraderie with other employees is pretty good. People aregenerally friendly and fun to be around. Some managers/supervisors are more fun to work with than others, but in there were very few people that I wouldn't want to work with. I noticed some people were able to move up and into better positions so it seems like there's a possibility of upward mobility. Breaks fluctuate. You may have some longer relaxed breaks during an "easier" event or close to none if it happens to be a hectic event and/or staffing is low.

Cons

My problem with Abernethy comes down to transparency. I didn't mind the seasonality of the job (working almost no hours between November and May) because I was prepared for that. But I applied for a position that I never got to do. That's right. I was hired on and told to do a different, more entry-level position to gain experience before training for the position I had applied for and *I thought* had been hired to do. I didn't have a problem with this. But after two training sessions I was pulled off the schedule and never trained again for that position. I continued to work in the position I had not applied to do. I came back for the next season, with the understanding that I would get an opportunity to train for my desired position again. But instead I noticed other, newer people being trained for it. I gave it a couple weeks and asked if there was a possibility that I would get a chance to train again for the position I wanted. I was told that no, they had enough people to do it. This is not cool. At all. If they thought I wasn't a good fit, they should have told me instead of stringing me along. There is definitely some favoritism at play here and a lack of communication and transparency between staff and management.

Pros

I worked at the Abernethy Center for almost three years and the two aspects of working at Abernethy that stand out the most for me are the team atmosphere that is present between the staff and management and the support I received as an Event Manager from our Operation's Manager. In my experience of working in the hospitality industry I have never encountered a work environment with such a commitment to the success of each employee on the team. You can count on the following as an employee of the Abernethy Center: -Clear expectations about the responsibilities of your job and training to support you in achieving success. -A work environment with a zero tolerance policy for gossip. -Generous financial compensation, acknowledgement, coaching and support from the Operation's Manager. Last, but certainly not least, the Abernethy Center is a really fun place to work. It was a privilege to work with such a great team of people.

Cons

I don't have any cons regarding my experience with the Abernethy Center.
