Pros
Please read this review after you've read the review titled "Counterpoint to the rants of disgruntled mostly former employees." The only item that I can agree with is that they have a decent work life balance, and the pay is good. Also, DOs are generally great people. There is continued growth in the profession- in no thanks to the AOA. The AOA is notorious amongst it's member base (check out the class action lawsuit against them) for creating barriers to growth for their members by making them jump through hurdles to accomplish anything. Additionally, once the single GME merge is complete, there will be effectively no reason for any DO to maintain membership with the AOA, and considering the opinion of the member base, they won't. Strong financial health? The AOA is embroiled in a class action lawsuit with its member base because they forced their members to maintain membership due to an archaic rule that jeopardized their board certification if they didn't maintain membership. In response to that lawsuit, the AOA decided to no longer make it a requirement to maintain membership. Considering member dues makes up a good chunk of their revenue, and they love to pretend they've built out other ways to get revenue but actually haven't, you'd essentially be hopping on a sinking ship if you chose to work there.
Cons
I could pontificate about the CEO and her utter disregard for staff, as well as her complete lack of knowledge on how to run an organization, but I think the other reviews sum that up fairly well. The AOA has absolutely the worst communication of any organization I have ever worked at. They routinely switch gears and direction based on a whim of the CEO, or a complaint from a physician member. Senior leadership spews on about their strategic plan, but they don't actually follow through on anything they plan to do. Staff are confused about why the CEO travels so much because there is a president and president-elect of the organization, both of whom are DOs and can represent the profession better than she does. Additionally, staff are never tangibly shown the benefits of her travel, except for the monthly all-staff meeting when she gets up and tells us how great she is. Senior leadership keeps staff in the dark about a lot of really important issues, and this is why you continue to see high turnover. No one wants to work at a place where you feel like you don't know what is going on and you're honestly not even sure what you're working towards.
