Pros

It wasn't located in the middle of an active war zone. It was in the same direction as my favorite coffee shop.

Cons

I know this is long but stick around. I promise this will be worth the read. This job starts off amazingly! I'm hired on the spot. I'm given a raise, a promotion, and offered the option to hire an assistant, all within my first two weeks. It all seemed too good to be true. I worked in a small area with the owner/boss and his wife (basically his secretary who did most of the hard work and got screamed at for not moving the speed of light, even though she was disabled. she was a sweetheart. we liked her. we would have left a lot sooner if it wasn't for her). The first week was full of friendly conversation, professional learning, and the boss man literally raving about how good I was and how happy he was to have found me. Then a switch was flipped. This place turned into the most toxic work environment imaginable - and I'm not alone in this sentiment, as someone hired shortly thereafter me literally walked out on day 5 (because of the boss). The owner/boss is a vile man, with a bad temper and that old school distaste for women that some sack-lacking men still cling to. And I wish I was kidding. If my male coworker (5 day guy) made a silly mistake, boss man joked it off. If I made the SAME mistake, I was yelled at about how stupid and useless and worthless I was, in front of the whole office, until I cried. He was unrelenting. Mind you, these mistakes were small, normal things that a new employee learns from in the first few weeks/months at a brand new company. It was never anything serious. I remember my second week there, I asked the boss to review an email I was about to send to an important client. It was covering a topic that was brand new to me and I just wanted to confirm that all of the information in the email was correct. He responded, "you've been here long enough. I shouldn't have to review anything with or for you. If there's something you don't know how to do that's your fault for not listening the first time I talked about it". He'd never talked about it, given any guidance, anything. I was just told "send so and so an email about blank". Shortly after that, not a full 2 weeks in, I approached his desk (which was literally two feet behind mine. we were all in the same room) and I said "sorry to interrupt. when you have a second, I have a question for you." He slammed his fists down on his desk, took a deep breath, composed himself, and quietly asked me "what have I said about asking me questions?"I didn't have a response because, excuse me sir, you've said nothing and I thought questions were good for a new employee to have (note that I was not constantly in his face with every little question. he told me something once, I learned it. I picked questions out very, very carefully so as not to provoke his temper). He continued, "I don't like when you ask me questions. I just don't like it. I don't like when you ask questions. I don't really like when you talk." He then went back to his computer, my question still unanswered and my jaw on the floor. The things I put up with at this job were honestly, nearly, unbelievable and I wrote things down immediately after he said them for that exact reason. In the end, his lash outs at me were still no match for the screaming sessions he had AT his wife. She was an incredibly hard working woman. Kind, efficient, capable. The boss, however, treated her like she was some inept, useless, sack of oranges. He once asked her for a clients file. She immediately stopped what she was in the middle of and began fingering through the hundreds and hundreds of files we had, looking for the right one. I'm talking 20 seconds later, here it comes. Boss man temper tantrum. He started screaming at her. Screaming. "How long does it take to find a file? ~ If things were done correctly here in the first place this kind of thing wouldn't happen! ~ God, why can nobody but me do anything around here? ~ Do I ask too much? (he did btw. no human could produce the amount of work he asked for. I showed up early and left late every day, skipping lunch, and still couldn't do it) His language was much more colorful and the things he called her were beyond unacceptable. She would stay calm the whole time. This behavior wasn't unusual for him, clearly. I didn't last long here because, in the end, I decided to put my mental health above a steady paycheck. I'm sorry for anyone else who has dealt with a similar workplace experience. It's not okay and nobody deserves it. Needless to say, in this instance, I would NOT recommend going anywhere near this company, let alone working for them. Straight up, not a good time.
