Pros

Staff discounts. Some colleagues were nice

Cons

Where to begin. Business was founded by Matt Turner but was funded by his wealthy father Graham Turner. I think that says a lot about the business right there as this is not a self made man and therefore not someone staff earning minimum wage respect or trust. I feel that this disconnect between upper management and regular staff are where a lot of the problems with 99 Bikes lie. Profit is everything at 99 Bikes. You start the day by tallying up everyone’s previous day’s profits to shame those not making enough money into making more money. No training was provided for what was a highly technical role and when targets were not being met after three months, was immediately placed on performance management. In order to meet targets, staff are encouraged to forego breaks and it was not uncommon to work a 10 hour day with only a 15 minute break. And forget about claiming overtime. The workplace itself was filthy with serious pest issues (such as maggots in the sink). Management was inexperienced and lacked necessary people skills such as basic empathy. Pay is basically minimum wage until management decides you are making enough money for the business. Workplace culture at the store level is highly toxic with politicking and backstabbing commonplace. So glad I got out when I did.

Pros

Staff discounts and that’s it

Cons

Very little formal training, they use the more experienced people to train new hires which loses you commission. Management is full of under-qualified people that don’t know what they are doing and have full control over your role and the store you work at, and any criticism of them is twisted into insults which leads to your discipline. Unrealistic targets for sales and mechanics, leading to skipped lunches and unpaid overtime. Mechanics are pressured to upsell unnecessary parts and labour to meet the extreme goals, and many mechanics screw over others by taking high paying services and are then praised for it. Small stores are routinely compared to the bigger stores and scrutinised for naturally making less profit. Constant staffing issues, high staff turnover and they hire just about anyone, including people that have never even touched a bike before. It’s very sink or swim, they only care about the people that make the most money for the company and let them get away with a lot of things that are against procedure or would lead to anyone else getting disciplined
