The hiring process at 1910 Genetics was one of the most well-structured and engaging experiences I’ve had. The Talent team, led by Derron, maintained excellent communication throughout the process, ensuring I was well-informed and supported every step of the way. The interview process itself was rigorous and thorough, featuring multiple stages, including a technical review panel. I was asked to prepare and present two case studies, which gave me the opportunity to showcase my skills while getting a real sense of the challenges and opportunities at the company. As 1910’s first full-time employee, I’ve watched this company grow from a closet-sized space housed in a local startup incubator to building out the wet lab and office space that we currently use. Over the past five years, I’ve come to cherish the team that I lead (AI Research) and the strong cross-functional collaboration that exists between us and the biology and chemistry groups. The overall 1910 team includes strong biology and chemistry domain experts who constantly collaborate with the AI group; providing us with important pharmaceutically relevant insights for incorporating into subsequent modeling efforts. Despite several growing pains (see Cons), this company has an extremely bright future. The AI work at 1910 is driven by wet lab results rather than in silico hype. I appreciate that we have the freedom to explore the most promising cutting edge drug discovery solutions as we partner with Pharma and Tech companies to develop the infrastructure layer of AI for drug discovery.

I've watched this company develop from the seed stage. There are many things that have been done right at this company but just like any startup there have been some growing pains related to both people management and early software infrastructure. As someone who began as an individual contributor before advancing to management, I admit that my early management inexperience contributed to these growing pains. After several strategic hires, adherence to a clear observable-key-results system, and an overhaul of our HR processes, I believe that we are beginning to hit our stride.
