Pros

The ideas behind Dakota Software's applications are very interesting. The content that they've spent 25 years creating is their selling point. You'll be very busy - never bored! Small company, so you'll have many jobs. Some people (lower in the ranks) are trying their best to rewrite the software so it functions like people expect 21st century software to function. I learned a lot about different kinds of technology when working there.

Cons

The support and services (implementation) teams have been struggling for years. Sales and R&D think it's a problem with the services department. It's not. The struggles stem from sales making promises to customers that can't be kept. They also stem from the fact that the software is old and dated and buggy. Upgrades only introduce new bugs. Customers have almost no way to customize the software themselves, so they are left waiting and angry. The tools that the services team has are garbage. For all these reasons, turnover in this department is absurdly high. Customers have noticed and are starting to drop off themselves. The president of this company holds power too close and doesn't listen to other people. He has also kept people on board who should have been fired for laziness, lying, sexual harassment, and other serious problems. If you're a person who cares about your work, you will struggle here. If you're lazy, you'll coast! Sales is overpaid and everyone else is underpaid. I genuinely wonder how the company has survived this long, and suspect it will be sold within a few years.

A very stressful environment

Pros

Most of the teams are composed of recent college grads or 20 somethings. The location is great-being downtown gives you access to a ton of cool events going on in Cleveland. If you are a recent college grad looking to break into the software field, Dakota is a great "starter" company for you to do that.

Cons

There are no processes-it's difficult to ramp up as a new employee when you have no way of knowing how to go about taking on a project. Upper level management does not want to pay the money for good developers, good web tools, or training for its employees. There's no process for annual reviews or raises. The software is antiquated, and there are bugs galore.

Joke of a company...

Pros

If you would like to work for a company that has no direction, no requirements, no clue on how to build an application and also has a revolving door of management, THIS PLACE IS FOR YOU!!!

Cons

Strapped for money. The company is not profitable. Revolving door of management has made projects stagnant and without direction. Your ideas and suggestions are not welcome and are seen as counter productive. Openly hire back former employees that are verbally abusive and ridicule others if further explantion is warranted. Their "new application" which has been gathering requirements for over a year, still doesn't have any much less a line of code written. Wants to think they are Agile/Scrum but got all their information on the process and how to work therein from YouTube. Doesn't communicate with employees beyond "sales wins" and apparently gives reviews without the reviewee being present and then uses that review as a basis for termination. No room for growth, no direction, emotional leadership, views passive comforting lies over frank hard truths, looks for scapegoats vs recognizing faults...all of this leads to wasting money and spining in circles. The CEO us clueless and is too emotional vs thoughtful and logical. Changed technical directors TWICE within 8 months but blame the underlings for why things aren't accomplished. Waste of a company...
