I have been working at Cover full-time

    Pros

The team is very friendly, talented and supportive. It's fun to come to work every day and gratifying to know that we're helping to build something that makes a difference in people's lives. Our office is located in an accessible area of Toronto (Queen/Spadina) and we have catering 4/5 days of the week.

    Cons

We're already outgrowing our new office so the meeting room space is limited and we are experiencing some growing pains as we transition from being a very early-stage startup, but it's to be expected and doesn't impact the day-to-day.

I worked at Cover full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Catered lunches, some of the best engineering talent in the city

    Cons

The founders are very immature and lack real experience. They think that flying around is life experience but have never owned a car. They do not have a plan or even know what kind of exit they want. The head of product (co-founder) is in way over her head. The founders have no idea of what they actually wants but spends their time looking for magic bullets to solve things with a wand. The founders are literally the embodiment of the Dunning–Kruger effect. Listen to the CEO then google phrases that he repeats: you'll find that they are really just the best sound bites from medium articles or hacker news.

    Cover Response

    CEO

Hey, First of all, I want to apologize for the experience you had at Cover. As you pointed out, we've worked hard to hire well and build out a supportive engineering culture that gives our colleagues an opportunity to grow and meaningfully contribute. You were a part of that culture, so I don't take your feedback lightly. I appreciate you taking on the task of helping us build out something that is non-trivial, knowing the path we've followed hasn't always been a straight line. As always, my door is open to direct feedback (karn at cover.com), and I hope you stay engaged with the team and our alum. All the best, Karn

I worked at Cover full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Really great people to work with, decent work/life balance, decent benefits

    Cons

Was told there was sufficient funds for 1+ years but then they laid off a huge chunk of the company with no warning / communication. Growth is preached but not really followed up on, significant miscommunication / inefficiencies between different teams.

I worked at Cover full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Was a great learning experience. Learned a lot from insurance and met great people. Unlimited PTO was very nice to have also.

    Cons

Lack of communication with upper management. Customer service was constantly overlooked was not listened to when issues were presented. We were told that we had funding for over a year and then 70% of company was laid-off over night.

    I worked at Cover full-time

    Pros

Learning about insurance with some pretty cool people.

    Cons

The opportunity for growth. The lack of knowledge on the upper management level. The lack of transparency. The no warning of lay-off, after we were told we were secure for at least another year. The implementation of new practices without everyone knowing how to do it properly.

I have been working at Cover full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Unlimited PTO - take time when you need it under managers discretion Catered Lunches Stock option but no 401k Supplemental health, dental and vision Stipend for subscriptions and gym Great people to work with

    Cons

A lot moving parts in a startup and things take too long to get implemented. Upper management makes certain decisions without realizing the strain it makes on the sales team who are pitching this to consumers. There is a divide between sales and management. There is no transparency across all teams. Compensation is mediocre. Probably one of the lowest paying in the Bay Area. Micromanaging VP believes that what he is doing is right but it’s only looking good on what’s on screen. Metrics and data seem to be construed. More like estimates than real data. Implements ideas that are questionable. Sales has to basically pick up the pieces. Work/life balance seems to be okay.

    Pros

Decent learning opportunity about insurance. Fun culture and fun people. Free lunch and lots of snacks. Regular happy hours with the company.

    Cons

Lack of career growth especially for sales. Lack of trust. Benefits could be better. People talk behind people’s backs. Lack of mentorship.

I have been working at Cover full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Fun culture, company activities, supportive group, catered lunches, nice office, growth opportunities (sales promotes from within), great benefits.

    Cons

Leadership could be a bit better at communicating, but as a startup we're growing fast and things are happening quickly.

I have been working at Cover full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Good people and good vibe.

    Cons

Location of office is not ideal, and their is no growth potential at the moment. Growth is being preached a lot, but it’s a couple year out for anyone to potentially get promoted within the company.
