Pros

- exciting creative projects - generous salaries and bonuses - perks and wonderful camaraderie-building team - studio founder genuinely cares about the team.

Cons

I came to Compulsion thinking it would be different from AAA. They talked a lot about autonomy and creative ownership. But as the team has grown, nearly all of the creative people from the company's last game have left or been pushed out and replaced with AAA people. Decision making is now top-down and micro-managed, because that's what the AAA people are used to. These people aren't bad, but they form cliques with people they know from before and make people with indie backgrounds feel unwelcome. It is still a great studio for many reasons, but if you're coming from indie these people may not take you seriously. They don't value the skills that come from working with limited resources and needing your creativity to compensate for lack of $$. Whether you will be happy here all depends on who you are and how you like to work.

Pros

- An incredibly rare people centric, empathetic, progress place - People are treated with respect, dignity and appreciation - Deeply passionate about the craft and artistry - Fantastic creative and wildly talented teams - A truly compassionate CEO who cares for his people

Cons

I find the following incredibly hard to write due to my affection for the people & place but - Leadership that means well but does not comprehend the impact and ramifications of their actions - Lack of focus, discipline, processes, and clear direction - Appalling prioritisation and communication (in the sense of a lack off) from some of the most central leadership - At times distrusting, and insular: a hierarchy/clique of trust that causes outsiders to feel even more alienated, unheard or seen - particularly as a significant number of the studio are friends + former colleagues from other Montreal studios, causing unconscious bias or favouritism - Continually allows things & people to fail/fall apart/crumble instead of stepping in with respectful yet affirmative action - resulting in lost time& work, but more importantly careers being harmed or ended, and peoples lives being thrown into complete disarray - Personal relationships are prioritised over, and impact other/less favoured people's work

Pros

- The managers are deeply committed to promoting an environment of inclusivity and collaboration where every team member feels valued. ・They prioritize giving employees ample time to express their thoughts and concerns, demonstrating exceptional leadership skills by actively listening to all members of the team. - The company's approach to conflict resolution is personalized and fosters a culture of openness and trust. -They offer significant flexibility and highly value your creativity. You will have ample opportunities for professional development and advancement, including the possibility of transitioning to a different role if that aligns with your career aspirations. - They place a strong emphasis on team building by offering regular opportunities for interested individuals to participate. This creates a highly enjoyable work environment for employees. - They endeavor to develop a highly innovative and distinctive artistic gaming experience that stands out within the industry.

Cons

- Due to the team's diverse professional backgrounds and perspectives, accommodating everyone's needs has been challenging at times. However, the company has recognized that it lacked structures and processes to effectively understand and address the diverse needs of its team members. While the company's recognition of the need for change marks the first step in mitigating conflicts and fostering a more inclusive work environment, it's important to note that change can take time. So if you are someone who is willing to be patient and trust in the process of change, and is committed to working towards a common goal, then Compulsion Games can be a very rewarding and fulfilling place to work.
