Pros

You can really get into the individual cases that you have going through and everyone knows everyone.

Cons

The superiors and people with a lot of pull are most of the time there because they know someone. I have seen many qualified applicants get turned down when they apply for a job simply because they are more qualified than the person hiring them. They do not necessarily look for the best candidate, but more for their neighbors kids or their nephew.

Pros

Once you make probation, you're pretty solid unless you mess up horrifically (...and I've seen some people do that and still stick around a long time). Also, after you've made probation in one position, if you take another County job it's only 6 months probation.

Cons

The benefits and the pay pretty much suck, but compared to anything else in the county, it's all right. Depends on your department though; I think DESS is hell, but other places aren't so bad. Also, the county is pretty rife with nepotism (they like to pretend otherwise, but... yeah.)

Pros

Lots of nice co-workers. Ability to transfer to a different dept/location after a year of probation if you qualify for a different job spec. Good benefits but you have to pay much higher premium on medical now after Obamacare.

Cons

Low pay that takes act of Congress to give you a raise other than a COLA minimum raise over the years. Unflexible work schedule. You get "stuck" in the same department if they want you there. Don't stay if you want to move up quickly, get decent start-up pay, or not into long probationary period during which they don't have to have a reason to let you go.
