The worst nightmare ever!

Pros

None unless one likes working for jerks.

Cons

Decisions, careers, individual progress are either encouraged or hindered based on Managers' personal agenda. No merits or skills are taken into account. Most of the people who have been at BMA/BMJ are referrals/friends/spouses of board's members. Anybody who's outside that circle will have a very tough time fitting in, and be sure to have a very hard life proving your worth, skills etc... HR is a true joke and a mere decoration. The culture resembles the old Colonial Empire attempt to take over the rest of the primitive world.

One of the worst

Pros

I really liked the on-site cafeteria.

Cons

One of the worst cultures I have seen. Bullying is 100% normal and acceptable at BMJ. Managers have no idea how to work with others let alone how to manage people. Regardless of what they tell you please do not ever make suggestions or disagree with someone as it is very dangerous and unacceptable at BMJ.

Dear reviewer -this is very disappointing to know your time at BMJ was one of dissatisfaction with the Management and Culture. Due to the anonymity of these reviews it is difficult to respond in any other way than to say we are sorry that your time at BMJ was not a positive one. I am unaware of the circumstances that lead to you leaving us but hope that you were able to get support through our various confidential and safe employee engagement or assistance professionals in the absence of you feeling like you could talk to your manager or another colleague. We wish you the very best for your future and thank you for your honest feedback

Pros

A powerful brand in medical publishing and clinical knowledge. Investor in people. Pay scales used to be quite good. New CEO seem to be trying his best.

Cons

Multiple rounds (almost back to back) of restructuring and lay offs, which seems to be a never ending phenomenon past 10 years. Company is now retracting back to what it used to be 15 years ago. A smaller medical publisher. Every September with budget review, some hard working people are made scape goats while executives get grander titles. Company which took pride in impartiality and integrity of the clinical knowledge has gotten rid of almost all externally facing clinically qualified staff. Seriously questionable HR practices.

Thank you for your feedback. It is true that we have had some restructuring which has resulted in some redundancies. We try and control these wherever possible with re-deployment and re-training. Our number of redundancies have always remained sub 5% of staff (at it's peak) and have numbered approximately 3% of staff at other times. We have many ways that recognise loyaly and hard work from our STAR awards and annual awards to recognition every 5 years for service.
